Back in 2010, the then-new version 4.33 of Station Playlist Studio, the software program which I used to do my Internet broadcasting, introduced the ability to stop the "echo" of the microphone - until then, if you were not using a mixer, you always heard an echo-back of your voice when the microphone was switched on. The ability to finally remove this echo was a welcome treat to Studio users. At that time, in response to inquiries from broadcasters, I wrote a set of instructions on how this was accomplished. Since then, I have been sort of the _go-to" guy for these instructions, but I never had the foresight to save them in a file, so had to dig through mail archives every time.
I now present these intstructions here for posterity. I even went to the trouble of instaling Studio version 5.1, to make sure these instructions are still up-to-date. I've modified for style, clarity, and the fact that I initially had some steps in the wrong order. I hadn't paid much attention to these things in the original writing of the instructions, because I was quite sure I'd never deal with them again once they were written. So I hope this will help someone.
From within studio 4.3 or above:
1. Go to options with control+o. Go to the output tab, and the mixer output subtab.
2. Find "monitor device". It's disabled by default. Choose the device with which you are monitoring, in my case, my USB headset.
3. Go to the input tab, and the mic input subtab.
4. From within this tab, ensure that "record from device" is checked, if you are using a version of Studio that includes this option. Also check "mute mixer" and "toggle monitor".
5. Now, when you press m or n for mike, you may hear the sound hiccupping slightly on your end, however, this does not come through on your sound output. You should be good to go.
