What's the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?

Muffins use brown sugar and applesauce. Cupcakes use white sugar and oil. Muffins are less sweet, more textured. Cupcakes are frosted, muffins might have a crumb topping. Cupcake dissolve in the mouth, a sweet that doesn't linger. Muffins are filling.

Hmmm. I can't say I agree with the above. I would say that cupcakes are miniature cakes, so are made from cake batters, and muffins are miniature quick breads, made from quick bread batters. Either can use white or brown sugars or various fats.
