I am a very proud Canadian. While I love America and Americans (one American in particular), I do think that sometimes Canada, quite unintentionally, gets forgotten and ignored by our wonderful neighbors to the south. So here, to put Canada back on the map, is the Canada Awareness Quiz.

i'm totally guessing.

i have pretty much no idea.

this sort of proves your stereotype.

i'm about 87% sure on the president thing, though.

I worked for a Canadian Bank for almost four years and lived in Toronto 3-4 days most weeks. I made wonderful friends, consider them my second family and visit as often as I can. It always struck me that in general, quality of life was higher in Canada, distribution of wealth was fair, and national health care was impressive, and you seem to have a balanced, rational view of national defense.

Having written that, I never understood why Cadadians seem to care so much about American's opinion of Canada. The Globe and Mail would dedicate 2 editorials to the topic most weeks. You have good up North. Why care about what we think.

Several reasons, I suppose. First of all, America is the most powerful nation on earth. When you're almost a global nonentity and your neighbors are the most powerful nation on earth, their opinion matters. Also, if we do something that bugs you, you guys can make our lives miserable if you so choose. There are other reasons, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

I understand the first point, but somehow I don't this we'll go to war against you guys again since you won the last time.

It seems to me that Canada has always stood up to the US on issues of principle and national sovereignty. The boycott of Cuba being a perfect example. On many levels, Canada is less aligned with the US and especially my President that Great Britain.

Well, take the Iraq war as an example. I won't go into a debate on who's right, but we didn't follow you guys in that. A lot of us believe that a lot of the trade disputes our two countries have were made rockier as a result of our refusal to join you in Iraq. Because the United States is our biggest trading partner, and we theirs, the repercussions can be significant.
